Rentrak Cross-Platform Entertainment Rankings - January 7, 2015

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 7, 2015 /TRENDINGGLOBALNEWS/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ:  RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for Jan. 7, 2015.

Warner Bros.' "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" continues its world domination crossing three important box office milestones this past weekend—surpassing the $200 million mark in North America and the $500 million mark in the international territories for a combined global total that has now crossed the $700 million mark. Liam Neeson in Fox's action sequel "Taken 3" opened in two international territories with $9.5 million this past weekend ahead of its North American debut this Friday. Notably, the Bollywood comedy "P.K." from UTV is nearing the $90 million mark globally with fully $79.9 million of that derived from international markets.

In North American box office action, "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" was also the champ this weekend topping the chart for the third consecutive frame, adding another $21.7 million and bringing its domestic total to nearly $221 million. (FUN FACT:  Every Tolkien movie directed by Peter Jackson from the first "Lord of the Rings" movie released in 2001 to "Battle of the Five Armies" has opened in Mid-December and held on to the number one spot at the box office for its first three weekends!) Warner Bros. acclaimed "American Sniper" posts massive per-location averages in just four theaters ahead of its wide release in mid-January.

In DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals action, the two charts look identical in the top two spots with newcomer "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" from Paramount and its August hit theatrical release brethren, Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy," leading the charge simultaneously in both sales and rentals for the week.

Movies on Demand rankings continue to fall under the spell of Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy," which was number one on the chart in its MOD debut and stayed at the top this week. "Guardians" holds the distinction as the top grossing movie released in theaters in 2014 with $333 million at the domestic box office. The R-rated family comedy "This Is Where I Leave You," with the prolific Jason Bateman and Tina Fey, follows in second place.

In digital movie purchases and rentals, Fox's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the number one title last week, moves to second place as Disney's unstoppable "Guardians of the Galaxy" commandeers the top spot.

Our cable TV engagement chart sees a two-week domination by TNT's "Major Crimes" followed again by Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" in the second spot.
Meanwhile, Telemundo's always popular "Senora Acero" and CBS's perennial hit "NCIS" made it a one-two punch at the top of our broadcast TV engagement listings.
The top social media activity across broadcast and cable telecasts on our combined chart goes to NBC's "The Voice" followed by FX's "American Horror Story."
